The Dr. Karraker Cottage: A Tribute to Artistic Legacy

Cottage #1, designated as The Dr. Karraker Cottage, serves as a formal tribute to the profound artistic and educational legacy of Dr. Jack Karraker. This space honors a life characterized by significant contributions to cultural institutions and the advancement of art history. The main house where we serve breakfast also houses some of Dr. Karraker's work for guests to observe.

Dr. Karraker’s influence is evidenced by his transformative tenure at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, where he provided substantial leadership: "...at the age of 26 he became the head of the Art and Art History Department at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, a position he held for the next 32 years. During his time at UNK he increased the Art Department to 15 full-time and 9 part-time faculty members and also added four new art degree programs. Jack retired in 2004 after a 43 year career at UNK."

Dr. Karraker’s dedication extended beyond academia; he continued to create his own works of art throughout his career. He is particularly recognized as a visionary "museum founder," co-establishing The Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA). As an artist, educator, and cultural advocate, his legacy is captured through a wide range of interests—"reading, art, theater, musical performances, cultural activities and travel"—making this cottage a curated environment dedicated to his enduring impact on the arts.
